When you advertise on Facebook you would often run into questions like, what banner sizes you should use or whether you should use a video or a still image. Moreover, there are many different placements for Facebook Ads. Each placement requires a different creative. Even an experienced marketer could make a mistake, since there are so many options here.

If you choose the wrong size or a type of creative, this could really cost you a lot. Your banner might look fuzzy or edges will be cut off. Or your banner might not even show up on some Facebook placements at all. As the result your ad efficiency would suffer, you’ll have the low CTR and the high CPM and CPC. Banner formats that are supported by Facebook Ads?

Now, let’s break each Facebook ad creative down and look at them more closely.
The above are 6 basic sizes, starting with a horizontal one and ending with the full-screen, vertical placement. Each of these placements supports a still image as well as the video. There are 12 (6×2) different types of creatives overall.

We found from our experience that it’s not always comfortable to work with the proportion ratios. Thus, we’re giving you the right size ratios in pixels.

  1. 1.91:1 – recommended creative size: 1,200 x 628 pixels.
  2. 16:9 (Full Landscape) – recommended creative size: 1,200 x 675 pixels.
  3. 1:1 (Square) – recommended creative size: 1,080 x 1,080 pixels.
  4. 4:5 (Vertical) – recommended creative size: 1,080 x 1,350 pixels.
  5. 2:3 (Vertical) – recommended creative size: 1,080 x 1,620 pixels.
  6. 9:16 (Full Portrait/Vertical) – recommended creative size: 1,080 x 1,920 pixels.

Now let’s look at what sizes and types of banners you should use for different placements.

Recommendations on choosing the right size for your ad creatives

Okay, so we went over all types of ad creatives that are available for Facebook Ads. However, you shouldn’t go and start making all of these ad creatives right away. It will take too much of your time and would not be very productive. Once you get some experience, you will see which ad format would be more important and which platform performs the best for your ads. Below are some tips with the level of importance for your creatives. Use these tips to get the best result and to cover most of the available placements.

1. Universal format 4:5 (1,080 x 1,350 px).
This is the best format. You should use it first, because it is supported in almost all Facebook Ads placements, except for the carousel and except for the Facebook Feed image (video only). It occupies the most of the screen and draws a lot of user’s attention because of it. Whether you use a still image or a video, you can’t go wrong with this placement. But of course, we recommend you to test out a video as well as a still image.

There is a small hack, you can make pseudo videos (video effect glitch or progressive load) or slideshows from images, then they will be shown in this size.

If you create and use this format, you’ll get maximum result for the minimum amount of effort and time. The 20/80 Rule – for 20% of the time and effort you get 80% of the result.

2. Stories format 9:16 (1,080 x 1,920 px).
This format works only for mobile traffic!

If videos work well for you, make sure that your creatives are in done this format (1,080 x 1,920 px). Then show your ads in Stories. This format works well only for Stories placement.
Ad in this format occupies the whole screen, so you’ll get the maximum amount of user’s attention.

3. Carousel format 1:1 (1080 x 1080 px).
This banner format is great as well. It works for all placements for Facebook Ads. Including carousels. Use this format for your creatives if you notice that you get the most attention from News Feed placements or from desktop computers. Create the square banners and test carousel as it would most likely be very effective.

Regarding the choice between a still image and a video. We suggest you to use both, a still image and a video. Video also works well with carousels.
